Letter to President Obama
Recently, in an interview with ABC News, the President said, “I think same-sex couples should be able to get married,” making it clear he believes it is wrong to prevent couples who are in loving, committed relationships from getting married. The President’s view has been shaped by conversations with his family, friends, and the people who work with him at the White House. Ultimately, President Obama’s support of same-sex marriage is grounded in his values and his firm belief in treating others as we want to be treated.
The President knows that people have differing views on marriage and that those views, even if we disagree strongly, should be respected. This is not a Federal issue, and the President knows we must be respectful of religious liberty, including the freedom of churches and other faith institutions to determine their sacraments. While Americans will continue to have differing views on marriage, we must remain committed to working together to build a stronger, fairer America.
Dear President Obama,
My name is Kit, and I am a social work student. I am writing to urge you to consider not supporting the legalization of same-sex marriages; as well as becoming the supporter of Proposition 8.
I am a Christian and I am also aware of that you, Mr. President, are also a Christian as you go to a Christian church on Sundays. I believe that Mr. President, you are very familiar with what the Bible says about marriage and homosexuality. The Bible clearly says that marriage is a union between one man and one woman, “Therefore a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and they shall become one flesh. Genesis 2:24”. Moreover, according to the Bible which states that homosexual behavior is an abomination and unnatural, “You shall not lie with a male as with a woman. It is an abomination. Leviticus 18:22” “For this reason God gave them up to vile passions. For even their women exchanged the natural use for what is against nature. Likewise also the men, leaving the natural use of the woman, burned in their lust for one another, men with men committing what is shameful, and receiving in themselves the penalty of their error which was due. Romans 1:26-27”
I am worried that if you legalize same-sex marriages, it might increase negative effects of the nation:
a) Impact on education: Legalizing same-sex marriage, there is a possibility that schools will teach same sex marriage to the students without the consent of their parents.
b) Impact on religious freedom: Many rabbis, priests and pastors might need to stop preaching the Scriptures about homosexual topics, as well as perform homosexual marriages to avoid being sued for discrimination even though they know it is against their religious beliefs.
c) Impact on marriage: Legalizing same-sex marriage might change the definition of marriage from a union between one man and one woman to a union between two men, two women, one adult and one young child, or even human with animal. Not to mention that legalizing same-sex marriage might also lead to legalizing polygamy.
In conclusion, Mr. President, I urge
you to stand firm in your religious belief and uphold God’s standard on what is
right and wrong for the society. Please
reconsider not to legalize same-sex marriage as it will certainly bring a
tremendous effect on the nation instantly and our future generations. Also, I urge you to vote “Yes” on Proposition
8 to keep marriage between one man and one woman.
Please
